HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT – Real Art Ways celebrated the artistry and imagination of drag with Megafauna: A Selection of Biomimetic Drag, a one-night performance event that brought together four dynamic performers: Ezra Moth, Maljo Blu, Mx. Ology, and Amygdala. Presented in conjunction with Ezra Moth’s immersive eco-art installation, the show invited audiences to explore the intersection of biology, queerness, and performance through a series of acts inspired by the natural world.

Each performer interpreted living systems in their own way, blending song, movement, and visual storytelling to evoke everything from ocean life and fungi to birds and insects. The result was a vivid and thought-provoking celebration of how drag, like nature, thrives on transformation, adaptation, and self-expression.

The evening underlined why drag holds an important place in contemporary art. Beyond glamour and humor, drag has long been a medium for storytelling, social reflection, and creative defiance. It challenges norms while celebrating individuality, offering visibility and joy to communities that have often existed at the margins. By placing drag in dialogue with ecological themes, Megafauna: A Selection of Biomimetic Drag reminded audiences that identity and the natural world are both fluid, complex, and constantly evolving.

Winnie Wong, the Marketing Director for Real Art Ways in Hartford, shared with ConnecticutDrag.com, “The event was a hit, so many people came up to me at the end of the night expressing gratitude for being in the space with these performers and the opportunity to hear directly from them during a talk back. It was beyond moving.” After the performance, the audience was invited to take part in a conversation with Ezra Moth and the other performers.

Founded in 1975, Real Art Ways has been a cornerstone of Hartford’s creative community for nearly fifty years. Born from a collective of artists and musicians who sought an alternative space for expression, the organization has grown into a multidisciplinary hub that presents exhibitions, performances, and films while supporting artists at every stage of their careers.

Its mission, to present innovative work and engage the community through art, was reflected beautifully in this event. Megafauna: A Selection of Biomimetic Drag wasn’t just a night of drag; it was a living example of what happens when art, science, and queerness come together to expand how we see both ourselves and the world around us.

About the performers

(Text provided by realartways.org)

Ezra Moth
Ezra Moth is an interdisciplinary artist whose work spans both scientific curiosities and dreamlike utopias. Part mad scientist, part sculptor, and part drag persona, their work is inspired by the diversity, symbiosis, and queerness of nature.

Maljo Blu
Maljo Blu (they/she) is a creator, drag artist, and performer located in Brooklyn, New York. As a theatrical entertainer she uses movement, costume and projection to tell the story of her culture, past, and her fleeting attention span all wrapped up in one little spooky bow.

Mx. Ology
Mx. Ology is Brooklyn’s premiere celebrity dentist – clinical bombshell, body horror princess, Dadaist comedian, and cartoon come to life – her strong command of narrative draws audiences into a world of absurd, sleazy fantasy.

Amygdala
Amygdala is an inter-dimensional apparition that merges the hypocritical, the paradoxical, and the absurd into immersive multimedia drag performances. With the hair of a horse and a mouth of piano keys, she’s lived many lives, phasing into the mortal coil only for mischief and an ice cold Canada Dry.
