Lady Tatiana is not only an icon of the Connecticut drag scene but a legendary figure in drag as a whole. For more than three decades, she has carved a path as a trailblazer, mentor, and advocate, offering unwavering support to the Latin, trans, and queer communities. Her influence stretches far beyond the stage, shaping careers, guiding young performers, and fostering a sense of family within the drag world. Lady Tatiana’s story is one of resilience, artistry, and dedication. Honored as Queen Mother of the House of Legends and Matriarch of the Chez Est in Hartford, she has left an indelible mark on generations of performers, and her journey continues as she looks to inspire and mentor the next wave of drag talent.  

The local icon has spent an impressive 37 years in drag, a journey that began when she was just 14 years old in Puerto Rico. Lady Tatiana’s passion for performance took root early, shaped by both personal circumstance and creative drive. After leaving her home in Puerto Rico, she brought her artistry to Connecticut, where she became a fixture in the local drag scene. She performed at iconic venues in Hartford including the old Sanctuary, Nix’s Cafe, Polo Club, and Velvet Club, as well as the former Metro Club in Springfield, building a reputation for her enduring presence and commitment to the craft. Her career spans decades, reflecting both the evolution of drag culture and her own unwavering dedication.

At just 14 years old, Lady Tatiana found herself on the streets of Puerto Rico after leaving home, facing the harsh realities of survival at a young age. She connected with a man who worked as a bartender and performed in local shows, and through his guidance, she found her first opportunity to work in a club, even though she was not yet old enough to bartend. While working there, she saw her first drag show and immediately recognized it as a path she wanted to follow. What began as a way to earn money and survive quickly became a lifelong passion, setting her on a trajectory that would define her career and establish her as a figure in the drag community.  

She fled her home in Puerto Rico after years of abuse at the hands of her stepfather, who targeted her for being gay. Lady Tatiana recalled being verbally and physically abused and even threatened with a machete before finding temporary refuge with a neighbor. With nowhere to go, she survived on the streets until she met her first partner and moved in with him. Although that relationship ended, it led to another romantic connection that brought her to Hartford. At 19, she arrived in the city for the first time and decided to stay, drawn to the sense of safety and belonging she had long been searching for.  

Lady Tatiana chose her drag name to honor her drag mother, Tatiana, who had been a close friend and mentor. Out of drag, her mother was known as Peti, but the name Tatiana held deep meaning for her. After moving to Connecticut, friends suggested she modify her name, but she chose to keep Tatiana as a tribute to her late drag mother, who had passed away from HIV. While performing at the Polo Club, she met a friend who recommended adding a title to her name, and she adopted Lady, completing the name Lady Tatiana. The name reflects both her personal history and the enduring influence of her drag mother.

She describes her drag as rooted in classic elegance with a focus on glamour and sophistication. When Lady Tatiana began performing in Puerto Rico, her style leaned heavily into traditional elegance, reflecting the local drag culture. After moving to Connecticut, her drag evolved to incorporate a more balanced approach while maintaining the timeless qualities she values. She identifies as old school, drawing inspiration from the glamour and sex appeal of the 1980s and 1990s, and her performances emphasize poise, style, and a confident presence on stage.

Drag has taught Lady Tatiana the value of professionalism, discipline, and responsibility. At a young age, she turned to drag not only as a form of creative expression but as a way to survive and rebuild her life after leaving home. It provided her with stability and purpose, allowing her to channel her hardships into determination and artistry. What began as a means of survival became a lifelong passion that gave her independence and shaped her into the performer and mentor she is today.

Lady Tatiana is most proud of the resilience that carried her through the early years of living in Connecticut on her own. For a time, she relied on shelters and struggled to find stability, but her perseverance led her to create a new life. By 19, she had secured her first apartment and achieved financial independence, a milestone that marked a turning point in her journey. From there, she built a community that embraced her, earned the loyalty of audiences, and established herself as a consistent and respected presence across local venues, laying the foundation for a lasting legacy in drag.

This past April, Lady Tatiana was formally recognized by the Chez Est in Hartford, during the Chez Legends All Stars event, for her decades of dedication to the Connecticut drag scene. A trailblazer, mentor, and advocate, she has been a steadfast pillar of support, particularly within the Latin, trans, and queer communities. Her influence has shaped countless careers and personal journeys, offering guidance, care, and discipline when it was most needed. For many, she has been more than a performer; she has been family.

Her contributions were honored with the distinguished title of Queen Mother of the House of Legends and Matriarch of the Chez Est, a celebration that reflected the respect and admiration of those she has guided. That day, the room was filled with gratitude as her legacy as a leader, mentor, and mother figure was formally acknowledged, cementing her place not only in the House of Legends but in the hearts of generations she has inspired.  

Receiving the title of Queen Mother of the House of Legends and Matriarch of the Chez Est at the recent Chez Legends All Stars event was a profound moment for Lady Tatiana. The recognition reflected her years of dedication and hard work within the drag community and her commitment to supporting and uplifting others. She emphasized that her efforts are driven by a desire to serve her community, and the honor affirmed that her work has made a meaningful impact. Despite the accolades, she remains deeply connected to Chez Est, calling it her home, and expressed joy and pride in being a part of its legacy.

Looking ahead, Lady Tatiana hopes to pass along her legacy by teaching and mentoring the next generation of drag performers. She wants to guide emerging artists, sharing her knowledge and experience to help them navigate the world of drag. Her goal is to pave the way for future performers, ensuring that her influence extends beyond her own career and contributes to the continued growth and strength of the drag community.
