The Connecticut drag community is disoriented from the heartbreaking news of the passing of Bubblicious (Tia Lynn Waters), a cherished icon whose impact resonated far beyond the stage. For nearly three decades, Bubblicious brought her radiant energy, fierce talent, and unwavering advocacy for queer, trans, and people of color’s rights to every corner of Connecticut’s drag scene. As a proud Black trans woman, her legacy is a tapestry woven with unforgettable performances and relentless dedication to equality. Known for her warmth and generosity, she was a beacon of light and a role model for countless performers and fans alike. Though she reportedly passed peacefully in her sleep late Sunday night, her absence is profoundly felt today, leaving the drag community in mourning as they celebrate the life and legacy of their beloved Bubblicious, who will forever be remembered as a trailblazer and advocate.

Bubblicious’s journey into drag began humbly while studying at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, where she first explored dressing in feminine attire but hadn’t yet stepped into the spotlight. By the mid-90s, she was ready to perform, debuting in New York, where her charisma caught the attention of many. A chance job as a summer camp cook led to an unexpected adventure when a German friend she met there invited her abroad. In 1996, Bubblicious took the leap, spending two years in Germany and performing at nightclubs across Germany and the Netherlands. Her travels only enriched her artistry, and when she returned to Connecticut, she found a kindred spirit in Lady Chantel. Together, they graced the stage at Partners Cafe in New Haven, marking the start of Bubblicious’s enduring legacy as a beloved figure in Connecticut’s drag scene.

Bubblicious, also known as Bubbles, has long championed the importance of honoring and teaching the often-overlooked history of people of color and the LGBTQ+ community. Growing up, she saw firsthand how school curriculums excluded these vital narratives, leaving gaps in understanding and representation. She passionately highlighted the contributions of figures like the Black gay man behind many of Martin Luther King Jr.’s most powerful speeches, individuals erased from mainstream history but instrumental in shaping it. Bubblicious recognized the stigma that often surrounds being gay in the Black community, leading many to live in secrecy. By advocating for these hidden icons, she strived to remove the shame associated with queerness and color, creating a world where everyone can live freely and authentically. Through her work, Bubblicious hoped to inspire others to celebrate their truth, dismantle outdated perceptions, and break down barriers for future generations.

Bubblicious often expressed profound gratitude for her dear friend Patrick Dunn, known as Kiki Lucia in the drag community, whose unwavering support meant everything to her. Kiki was more than a friend; she was an advocate, ensuring that Bubblicious could perform with dignity, arranging accommodations like handicap ramps and lending a hand whenever she needed it. In times when she felt overlooked, Kiki’s kindness was a constant reminder of her worth. In a heartfelt moment this past April, Bubblicious had the honor of presenting the William Musanti Humanity Award to Kiki Lucia during Chez Legends All Stars in Hartford. We reached out to Kiki Lucia to offer our condolences and she shared with us, “She was just an amazing human, someone who loved fiercely and unconditionally, creative in every way possible and never let anything hold her back.”

Bubblicious remained unapologetically herself, finding strength in the love of her chosen family within the drag community and beyond. Her performances brought joy and inspiration to all who witnessed them, fueling her passion for drag and her commitment to uplifting others. Bubblicious always emphasized the power of kindness and mutual respect, challenging the common notion that rudeness is intrinsic to drag culture. Such behavior, she believed, reflects a lack of basic human decency, and she questioned why anyone should be denied a simple kind gesture. Bubblicious insisted that humor in drag should lift spirits, not demean others. Through her life and work, she advocated for an inclusive, positive community, where respect is the foundation and playful banter serves to bring people together.

Despite health challenges and the toll of aging, Bubblicious remained steadfast in her commitment to perform and make a difference. Her personal experiences as a child with diabetes and undergoing dialysis inspired her to advocate for safe spaces where everyone, no matter their age, can come together and find joy. Her drag transformed from simply being seen to truly being heard. Using her voice on stage, she spoke passionately about issues facing the transgender community, particularly the violence against trans women of color, and the struggles of young LGBTQ+ people. Bubblicious called on her community to stand up against these injustices and emphasized the critical importance of voting, especially in local elections, to ensure fair representation. Her drag journey blossomed into a form of activism, merging beauty with a powerful message. Initially, Bubblicious didn’t think she was saying anything particularly profound, but simply being herself made a significant impact.

Bubblicious’s legacy is one of resilience, compassion, and unwavering dedication to both her art and her community. From her early days in New York City’s drag scene to her powerful performances in Connecticut, she has consistently uplifted others, embodying the values of kindness, integrity, and advocacy. Recently nominated for ConnecticutDrag.com’s Person of the Year based on reader activity, her story was one of the site’s most-read articles, reflecting the deep impact she had on the community. Her journey, shaped by personal challenges and an evolving purpose, transformed drag into a platform for change, addressing issues like LGBTQ+ rights, inclusivity, and political engagement. Bubblicious inspired countless people to live authentically and treat each other with respect, breaking down barriers and redefining what it means to be a drag performer. She leaves behind a community that has been forever touched by her presence, her voice, and her vision for a better, more accepting world.
