In the vibrant world of drag, where artistry meets identity in the most unexpected ways, Enigma Jones stands out as a captivating force. Her journey began modestly, fueled by a quiet passion and a desire to express herself beyond the confines of her everyday life. From her early days of secret transformations behind closed doors to the electric energy of her current stage performances, her path has been one of discovery and growth. Along the way, she stumbled upon the dazzling realm of drag through a chance encounter with a local show, igniting a spark that would lead her to create a unique and whimsical drag persona. Her evolution from a tentative performer to a celebrated artist, with a style that blends campy humor and inventive twists, reflects a commitment to authenticity and a love for making people laugh.

Enigma Jones began her journey into drag seven years ago, in October 2017. It all started in the confines of her manager’s apartment at the gift shop where she worked. Nervous about revealing her passion at home, she found solace and support in her manager, who allowed her to ship costumes and supplies to his place. There, Enigma could transform in secret, away from the eyes of her family. When she went off to college later that year, her dorm room became her new haven. She continued to embrace her craft, participating in bi-annual fundraisers for a local queer youth organization, blending her creativity with a cause close to her heart.

Her interest in drag blossomed almost by accident. For a long time, no one had introduced Enigma to the art form, and she remained blissfully unaware of its existence. Then, she stumbled upon RuPaul’s Drag Race online, which piqued her curiosity. Determined to learn more, she watched as much of it as she could, while the show was still airing on Logo. This exposure revealed a fascinating new world to her. Intrigued, Enigma discussed it with her older friends who were more familiar with drag, and they encouraged her to give it a try. With minimal information and just one brush, she dove in headfirst, embracing the challenge and doing her best. Despite her humble beginnings, she has come a long way, continuously honing her craft and proving that all she needed was a spark of interest and a bit of determination.

The evolution of her drag name was quite the journey. The night before her debut performance on Halloween 2017, Enigma realized her original drag name didn’t fit her personality at all. She felt her true self was far more ridiculous, silly, and goofy than the fashion-forward name she had originally chosen. One word she frequently used in conversation was “enigma,” often referring to herself as such in a playful manner when people asked questions. It seemed to capture her quirky essence perfectly. She then brainstormed a list of potential last names, ranging from wildly outrageous to completely plain, and put them to a vote on her Instagram story. The overwhelming choice was “Jones,” solidifying her new drag identity. Thus, Enigma Jones was born, a name that has stayed with her ever since, reflecting her playful and enigmatic nature.

Her style of drag is best described as camp comedy with an always unexpected twist. Each performance Enigma delivers is a delightful surprise, leaving the audience in awe. Her acts are hilariously entertaining, bursting with creativity, and never fail to captivate. The feedback she often receives is a testament to her talent – spectators frequently remark on how her performances leave them in stitches, amazed by her ingenuity. Her ability to pivot and adapt has defined her journey, making every show a fresh and memorable experience.

One important aspect which shaped Enigma’s drag persona is how she got into clowning and how it has significantly influenced her drag. Her journey into clowning began at college, where the theater department offered a clown class. Intrigued, she spoke to the class’s teacher, who also did drag and explained that many drag artists study clowning due to its focus on character building and commitment to the craft. Initially, there wasn’t space for her in the class, but she was invited to audit it. Soon after, she was offered a spot and encouraged to create her own clown character, creating Egg – all lowercase, an anxious clown, named as a playful pun “Egg the Clown”.

Exploring the world of clowning allowed her to fully develop her “clown brain,” a creative mindset where she commits entirely to her character’s choices and actions. This approach has deeply enriched her drag performances. For instance, if she’s portraying an ear of corn in an act, she doesn’t just stand there; she immerses herself in the role, imagining herself sprouting from a seed and growing into a corn stalk. This dedication to fully embodying her characters, no matter how unconventional, has become a hallmark of her drag artistry, continually pushing her to think outside the box and deliver uniquely captivating performances.

When she’s on stage, performing and looking out into a crowd that is fully engaged and excited, a profound sense of validation washes over her. It affirms her long-held desire to entertain. She recalled her grandmother taking her to dinner theater as a child, a memory where watching “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” ignited her wish to make people laugh and have a good time. Although Enigma didn’t initially know what form this passion would take, it eventually led her through theater and into directing, another of her great loves. Each time she sees the audience’s enthusiasm, it fulfills that childhood dream, bringing her immense joy and satisfaction.

Doing drag has taught her a profound lesson: she is enough. For many years, Enigma placed a lot of power in other people’s hands regarding how she felt about herself. Coming from a theater background, she was accustomed to the collaborative nature of the art form, where other people’s opinions held significant weight. While drag also involves some level of collaboration, especially in terms of performance feedback, it is largely an individual endeavor. At her level, she manages almost everything herself, from conception to execution. This autonomy has validated her self-worth, showing her that the things she does to feel good about herself come from within. Achieving her goals in drag has provided her with a strong sense of self-affirmation, allowing her to walk confidently in her own value without needing external validation.

Looking back over her seven-year drag career, Enigma feels incredibly proud of the Mx. Chez Comedy Pageant at Chez Est in Hartford. This recent achievement stands out as the coolest thing she’s ever done. It was her first time hosting, producing an event, and creating a competition. She had never had the chance to showcase comedy to the community in such a way before. For her, it was important to foster spaces where people could experiment, grow, learn, and have a good time. The comedy pageant achieved all of this, both for her and the community, marking a significant and proud moment in her journey. The success of the event was so well-received that it is now projected to be an annual competition, much to her delight. This accomplishment has not only allowed Enigma to shine but also to provide a platform for others to do the same, making it a truly special milestone in her drag career.

For many years, she navigated the drag scene solo. Originating from Indiana’s drag community, which had a more pageant-oriented mindset, Enigma struggled to find artists who resonated with her unique style. It wasn’t until she relocated that she encountered Maddie Triss, who captivated her with a quirky clown performance. Intrigued by Maddie’s creative ideas and seeing potential that needed a bit of guidance, she struck up a friendship. They bonded over their artistic similarities and mutual love for drag, and she decided to adopt Maddie into her drag family. This partnership, formed just over a year ago, has since flourished, with the two supporting and inspiring each other in their drag journeys.

Enigma Jones, a name now synonymous with excellence in the Connecticut drag scene, etched her legacy as the very first winner of Chez Legends Snatch Game presented by ConnecticutDrag.com. The magic of Snatch Game that night was palpable, an electrifying blend of humor and artistry that showcased the extraordinary performances of six immensely talented drag performers. Looking further into the future, Enigma aspires to develop a comedy news segment akin to the work of Seth Meyers, John Oliver, or Samantha Bee. With a strong political awareness and a desire to present current events in a digestible format, she envisions a YouTube live-streamed show.
