In a shocking turn of events, Tisane Euro-Asian Cafe, a beloved staple in Hartford, Connecticut, has closed its doors permanently. Established in 1999, Tisane Euro-Asian Cafe quickly became a hub for the community, known for its cozy ambiance, eclectic menu, and vibrant events. The closure of the venue unfortunately means that tonight’s annual ‘Mother Dearest’ drag show has been canceled.
Tisane, nestled in the state’s capital, has served as more than just a cafe; it’s been a haven for queer members of the LGBTQ+ community. With its welcoming ambiance and inclusive atmosphere, it provided a safe space where individuals could express themselves freely without fear of judgment. Whether it was sharing stories over a cup of tea or finding solace in the company of like-minded individuals, Tisane fostered connections and a sense of belonging.
The announcement of its closure is met with sorrow, as it leaves a void in the community – a space cherished for its acceptance and understanding. Tisane will be deeply missed, not only for its delicious beverages and cozy setting but for the invaluable support and refuge it provided to the LGBTQ+ community.
The venue played a pivotal role in Hartford’s LGBTQ+ scene, hosting drag shows, open mic nights, and other inclusive events. Among its notable offerings was the upcoming annual drag show, ‘Mother Dearest,’ that was scheduled for tonight. The show honored mothers of drag with special guests, Connecticut’s own and from RuPaul’s Drag Race, Robin Fierce and her drag daughter Natalia Fierce. Set to join the dynamic duo in the night’s lineup were featured local performers Mizery Mcrae and Marita Bonita alongside their drag daughters Bonita Katrina and Zella Cullatore, with music by DJ Edgewood.
The venue left this message for patrons on their website and social media, “Tisane Euro-Asian Cafe, the West End’s iconic tea house and cocktail bar for over 24 years, will close on Monday, May 13, 2024. Locals 8 is making every effort to relocate Tisane’s staff to positions at other Locals 8 restaurants in the Greater Hartford area. Gift cards will be honored at all other Locals 8 locations. Any tickets purchased for upcoming events will be refunded in full.”
Marita Bonita, a beloved figure in the local drag community and a regular performer at Tisane Euro-Asian Cafe, reacted swiftly to the unexpected closure of the venue. Scheduled to perform in tonight’s show, Marita took to social media to address her followers in the wake of this sudden turn of events, “Gonna miss this space. 15+ years performing and hanging out in this queer space. You’ll be missed Tisane.”
As Hartford bids farewell to Tisane Euro-Asian Cafe, questions loom about the future of its vibrant LGBTQ+ community and the drag scene it fostered. Residents are left hoping for new opportunities and venues to emerge, ensuring that the spirit of inclusivity and celebration that Tisane embodied will continue to thrive in the heart of Connecticut’s capital city.
