Community members and drag fans are set to gather at Trevi Lounge on Sunday, May 12th, from 6:00PM until midnight for the 2nd Annual CT Drag Me to Life Charity Benefit. This vibrant event, which made a dazzling debut last year in Hartford under the name “Drag Saves Lives”, aims to top its initial success in its new Fairfield venue.

The charity night is hosted by none other than Connecticut’s own Frankie Cyanide, who hosts Wacky Wednesdays at Trevi Lounge and was featured on our site in January! Frankie has organized a star-studded lineup of dozens of drag and burlesque performers from across the Northeast, who will be gracing the stage, donating their performances to support the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Connecticut Chapter (AFSPCT).

The evening is not only about spectacular performances but also about community giving, with various prizes up for grabs through a raffle. A full list of prizes, generously donated by local artists and businesses, will be announced closer to the event date, but include gift cards, designer accessories, and more. Last year’s raffle included everything from artwork to spa vouchers, raising substantial funds for AFSPCT’s vital programs and services.

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Connecticut Chapter (AFSPCT) is a vital part of the national organization dedicated to saving lives and bringing hope to those affected by suicide. The Connecticut chapter works tirelessly to understand and prevent suicide through research, education, and advocacy. By mobilizing volunteers and implementing community programs, AFSPCT strives to educate the public about mental health and suicide prevention, support those who have been affected by suicide, and reach out to individuals who are at risk.

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) was established in 1987 by a group of researchers and families affected by suicide, aiming to better understand and prevent suicide through research and education. The Connecticut chapter, part of this nationwide network, was formed to address the specific needs and challenges related to suicide within the state of Connecticut. AFSP Connecticut (AFSPCT) follows the organization’s mission by focusing on local outreach, education, and support initiatives tailored to the state’s communities.

Suicide rates are disproportionately high within the LGBTQ+ community, a troubling trend that extends into the vibrant yet often vulnerable world of drag culture. Members of the LGBTQ+ community face unique challenges, including discrimination, rejection, and a lack of acceptance, which can significantly contribute to mental health struggles and suicidal ideation.

Drag artists, while celebrated for their bold expressions of identity and artistry, can also experience intensified scrutiny both from within and outside the LGBTQ+ community. This scrutiny can lead to increased feelings of isolation, pressure, and mental health decline. The intersection of these identities intensifies the need for targeted support and understanding, emphasizing the importance of safe spaces and affirming communities to nurture mental well-being and resilience against the factors that contribute to such high rates of suicide within these groups.
